Internal Controls: Payroll and Personnel

Below is a listing of internal control (IC) best practices and the related University policy, if applicable:

IC 1: Required personnel (e.g., faculty, faculty associates, department chairs, school directors, and administrative professional staff) receive prior approval and properly disclose and report outside employment.

See University Policy 3.3.7 Secondary/Outside Employment. The policy applies to tenured or tenure-track faculty members, faculty associates, chairpersons, and administrative/professional employees and the requirement to complete the secondary/outside employment disclosures and file with the Office of the Provost.

IC 2: Employees who perform work outside of their job responsibilities may be eligible for compensation through Additional Pay.  Department administrators should receive prior approval from Human Resources before the work begins.

In accordance with Human Resources procedures, Additional Pay Information, department administrators should review all Additional Pay policies and procedures prior  to submitting and approving the Additional Pay request.  Employment Consultants in Human Resources should be contacted prior to the work beginning to discuss whether the work is eligible for additional compensation.
